Description

Boundaries

The ecoregion’s boundaries roughly encompass the region of Aceh in northern Sumatra and the islands of We and Breueh.

Topography

This ecoregion lies at the northernmost end of the Bukit Barisan volcanic mountain chain, and includes the volcanoes Weh, Seulawah Agam, Peuet Sague, Geureudong, and Kembar.

Terrestrial habitats

Terrestrial ecoregions include the Sumatran lowland rain forests, Sumatran montane rain forests, and Sumatran freshwater swamp forests.

Description of endemic fishes

Estimated 30 endemic species (M. Kottelat pers. comm. 2006). Endemics include numerous species of Cyprinidae and Siluriformes, most of them still unnamed.

Justification for delineation

This ecoregion represents the northernmost tip of Sumatra, its exact limits not clear as a result of very limited field data. It is delineated based on numerous endemic species of Cyprinidae and Siluriformes, most of them still unnamed (M. Kottelat pers comm. 2006).
